Reflection 6 ( Pedagogy )

Good afternoon. Thank you for still interested to read my new entry.

Okay, as promised this entry will be about the rules of effective use of powerpoint for teaching and learning.

1) Background colour
To be honest, i like to use colorful and bright background for my powerpoint. Not sure about the reason, maybe i just want to impressed my students with all the colour. Unfortunately, that is not effective for powerpoint presentation. The main focus for us by creating the powerpoint is actually to deliver the information to the students but if the powerpoint are so colorful it can distract the students. It will hurt their eyes and they tend to lose focus in a short time. So, black or white background is the best alternative to avoid all these problem from occur. And if we use dark background, we can use bright words. Same if we use bright background, dark words will work well.

2) Images
Students absolutely will get excited if we put some images to make our powerpoint look cheerful. But we must be aware and realize that less is more. So, just pick effective image to be put in our powerpoint. If possible, try to use images that students can relate to daily life. For example, if teacher want to show a situation in class, pick an image such as classroom in Malaysia so that the students will be more interested.

3) Animation and Transitions
Actually, for powerpoint to teach in class, no animation are needed to make it effective. But, if teachers feel that it will work in certain class, we may speed up the animation to avoid wasting the time. Plus, not all students will amazed by the animation and if the speed is too slow, it give chance for students to feel boring during our class. We really want to avoid that from happen in our class.

4) Fonts and wording
If you observe in detail, many of us like to use various fonts in doing powerpoint. And now i realized that it is not effective but only can cause wasting of time for us to finish the powerpoint. Like my lecturer said, " why not you just use the time to choose the fonts to think about the input for the powerpoint". And i have to say that i am totally agree with this. One or two fonts will be more than enough.

5) Put information in point form
Students will not be too excited if we let them to read few passage of essay from the powerpoint. It would be very bad for their eyes and focus. So,the most good things is to put and organize all the information in point form. By this, students will know which one is more important.

6) Use comic
As we know, students like something unique and close to their interest. So maybe we can use comic to deliver the information. They will read the information with interest and this will be easier for teacher to explain about the lesson later.

7) Put the instruction for each activity in class.
If the teacher want to play games or do activity in class, it will be more effective if the teacher put all the instruction in the powerpoint so that students won't ask for few times. They just need to read the instruction given.

8) Video
How to use video effectively in our powerpoint ? We always get this kind of question when we talk about the rules of effective powerpoint. For my opinion, the answer is yes. It would  be no problem for teacher to put videos to make the students more understand. But, one thing to look at, make sure the video is only a short one. Of course we need to explain also about the video. So here, make agood choice for the video.

Thats it ! 8 rules of effective powerpoint. Hope you get some benefits input from this entry. Btw, drop your own opinion in the comments section. Maybe you guys have something good to share about the effective powerpoint and i really interested to know.

See you again beautiful souls !
